The LA Times

I joined the LA Times at the midway point of a significant overhaul of their digital presence. I was brought on to focus on the video and multimedia aspect of the consumer facing site. In addition to this I helped to create and maintain a robust design system for the LA Times, which we then scaled to work with it’s 9 sister publications.

Over 600 features were included in the atomic design system we put together - each optimised for mobile, desktop and tablet. Above is a video gallery feature in it's mobile and desktop forms.

I also led design around sponsored content, and was responsible for ensuring ads were not misleading to users. As these ads were often built by third-parties, I was also responsible for communicating these designs, an example of which is shown above.

In addition to the design system we also created a series of styleguides for the LA Times and it's sister publications - an excerpt of which is shown above. These acted as a guide for the many designers working on the products across the organization.

Scaling the design system across different publications meant thinking ahead about flexibility and gap functionality. An obvious example: Users reading The Chicago Tribune have much more specific needs when it comes to finding out about the weather than those reading the LA Times.

I was very lucky to have worked on such a storied publication at such an important moment in time. The redesign increased user engagement and conversion metrics, The LA Times continues to be a hugely important source of news for millions on the west coast and beyond.
